How to use the Word Counter & Character Counter

    1. Type or paste your text into the box. Counts update as you type.
    2. Read the totals on the right: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and reading time.
    3. Check Character limits to see whether your text fits an X post, an SEO meta description or an SMS.
    4. Use Top keywords to spot repeated words, and the buttons above the box to change the case or tidy spaces.

    Counting words in any language

Most word counters split text on spaces, which fails for languages like Thai, Chinese and Japanese that don't put spaces between words. This counter uses your browser's built-in language segmentation, so สวัสดีครับ ยินดีต้อนรับ is counted as words, not as one long block. Characters are counted the way people see them, so an emoji or a Thai letter with its vowel and tone marks counts as one.

    Common length limits

    • X (Twitter): 280 characters per post
    • SEO title tag: about 50–60 characters before Google cuts it off
    • Meta description: about 150–160 characters
    • SMS: 160 characters per message, but only 70 when the text contains Thai, emoji or other non-Latin characters
    • Instagram caption: 2,200 characters · LinkedIn post: 3,000 characters · YouTube title: 100 characters
    • College essays: the Common App personal essay allows up to 650 words

    Reading and speaking time

Reading time assumes an average silent reading speed of about 238 words per minute. Speaking time uses about 150 words per minute, a comfortable pace for presentations and speeches. A 1,000-word article takes roughly 4 minutes to read and about 7 minutes to say aloud.

    Keyword density for SEO

The Top keywords table shows your most frequent words and what share of the text they make up. Use it to check that your main topic appears naturally, and to catch words you've repeated too often. There's no magic percentage, so write for readers first.

    Frequently asked questions

Is my text saved or uploaded?

No. Counting happens in your browser and your text is never sent anywhere. If you close or reload the page, the text is gone, so copy anything you need first.

    Do spaces count as characters?

It depends where you're submitting. Most platforms, including X and SMS, count spaces, so we show both: Characters includes spaces and Characters (no spaces) leaves them out.

    How are words counted?

A word is a run of letters or numbers. Hyphenated words like well-known count as one or two depending on your browser's language rules, and punctuation and emoji aren't counted as words.

Does it work for Thai, Chinese and Japanese?

Yes. It uses your browser's language segmentation to find word boundaries even without spaces. Results may differ slightly from other tools, since word boundaries in these languages can be interpreted in more than one way.

    How is reading time calculated?

Words divided by 238 words per minute for reading, and by 150 words per minute for speaking aloud.

Why is my SMS limit 70 characters?

Text messages containing non-Latin characters, such as Thai or emoji, use a different encoding that fits only 70 characters per message. Longer texts are split into several messages.
